DEKRA Testing & Certification, S.A.U. adds 5G technology within its scope for Over the Air (OTA) testing and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing services to support manufacturers to incorporate this technology into their products.

DEKRA has extended its scope for Over the Air (OTA) and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing services with the addition of 5G technology. DEKRA Testing & Certification, S.A.U. has a wide experience in OTA and SAR testing, services offered in its laboratories located in Málaga (Spain) for more than 15 years. Now, as part of its commitment to state-of-the-art technologies, DEKRA extends its scope to support manufacturers from automotive, medical, ICT, consumer products and other industries, to successfully include 5G technology into their products.
SAR testing is used to measure the part of the energy (radiofrequency) absorbed by the human body when using a wireless device. If these devices are used close to the user’s head or body at distances up to 20 cm, they must comply with the SAR limits to be commercialized into the market. Depending on the type of device and the applicable standards, there are different limits, testing procedures and measurements to evaluate SAR compliance.
OTA testing is used to evaluate wireless devices' performance, reliability and safety in different environments and situations to ensure they work correctly under most circumstances. During the evaluation, the device is exposed to different tests that simulate conditions that may alter its proper functioning with the aim to measure the signal path and antenna performance, among others. There are different international standards that establish the requirements to measure both receiver and transmitter performance (e.g. CTIA, 3GPP). Most network operators require manufacturers to perform OTA testing in their products.
"We are pleased to extend the capacity of our systems to include testing on all 5G NR FR1 frequency bands, both SA (Stand Alone) and NSA (Non-Stand Alone) modes. Our new scope covers the current certification requirements for FCC, ISED and RED certification for SAR, as well as upcoming PTCRB certification requirements for OTA and future requirements of mobile operators", said José de la Plaza Fernández, Director of EMC Laboratory at DEKRA Testing and Certification, S.A.U.
In addition to these services, DEKRA offers a wide range of testing & certification services for 5G technology, especially focused on IoT devices, connected driving and medical devices.
