DEKRA opens new 5G R&D laboratory with Telefónica
Test grounds for V2X components officially opened in Málaga, Spain
DEKRA and Telefónica have officially opened a new 5G research and development laboratory in Málaga, Spain. The objective is to provide a test environment in which components and applications for connected driving (V2X) can be tested and validated. As far as possible, the results will also be used in other DEKRA locations with corresponding environments (e.g. at Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Germany).
In addition to DEKRA Testing & Certification and the Spanish telecommunications provider Telefónica, also further project partners, such as the Andalusian regional government, the city of Málaga and the automobile manufacturer SEAT participated in the opening event. “With this research laboratory, which is unique in the world, we are able to develop test routines for testing and certifying 5G and V2x components as well as products for the mobility of tomorrow,” commented CTO and DEKRA Management Board member Ivo Rauh. “By cooperating with strong partners, we can provide the necessary innovative work to significantly improve road safety on the basis of connected driving.”
For several years DEKRA has been operating the test grounds in the Málaga Technology Park for testing and certifying so-called V2X (vehicle-to-everything) components and mobile communication products. In an area of 51,000 m², feasibility studies for all Spanish mobile communication frequencies can be implemented according to the new 5G telecommunications standard and new test methods developed. In addition, tests for all international mobile communication frequencies are possible in a specially shielded chamber.
The offer is targeted to manufacturers of mobile communication components and equipment as well as the automotive industry. The new 5G research laboratory is also available to regional high-tech startups involved in the further development of V2X technologies and services.
