E-mobility Testing

Testing and certification for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure technology

  • The electrification of the automotive industry

The electrification of the automotive industry is happening at a dizzying pace. Due to a combination of environmental legislation, sustainability targets, rising consumer demand and technological advancements, car manufacturers have little choice but to develop new hybrid and full-electric vehicle (EV) models. In the coming years, over 300 new full-EV models are expected to be launched in Europe alone. This trend is having an impact on the energy grid and charging infrastructure, not to mention on manufacturers of batteries and electrical automotive components. At DEKRA, we guide industry professionals around the world through the maze of options for e-mobility testing and certification.

    EV Charging

The charging infrastructure has a big impact on consumer adoption of electric vehicles. Battery range and charging time are still seen as limiting factors by many people. However, AC charging stations are becoming an increasingly familiar sight in urban areas. Moreover, fast-changing (DC) infrastructure is rapidly being installed along main motorway corridors, particularly in Europe. At DEKRA, we offer testing and certification services for all types of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) including home & industrial charging solutions (including for e-buses and e-trucks), fast-chargers, vehicle-to-grid and inductive charging systems, as well as interoperability with back-office systems.

    • Charging standards (CHAdeMO, CharIN - CCS, OCPP)
    • Communication protocols (DIN 70121/22, ISO 15118, CHAdeMO, OCCP 1.6, SAE J2847)
    • Market specific requirements (EV READY, SAE J1772, IEC 61851)
    • Functional safety (IEC 26262, IEC 61508)
    • Electrical safety (KEMA KEUR, CB, IEC 61851, IEC 62752, IEC 61439, IEC 62146, UL 2202, UL 2594, UL 2231)
    • Electromagnetic compatibility (IEC 61851, SAE J772)
    • Performance testing (IEC 62116)
    • Wireless testing (IECEE 802.11p/Wi-Fi, 3G/4G/5G)
    • Development testing
    • Validation testing
    • Environmental testing

    EV Batteries

In order to increase the range of electric vehicles, battery packs are becoming bigger and heavier – and hence pose an ever-greater potential safety hazard. At DEKRA, we offer a wide range of testing and certification solutions for both battery cells and battery packs, as well as homologation testing for automotive manufacturers at both full-vehicle and component level.

    DEKRA’s EV battery-related services include:

    • Functional safety (Type approval, IEC 26262)
    • Electrical safety (CB, EN 50604, ISO 18243, KEMA KEUR, IEC 62660)
    • Performance testing (ISO 12405, ISO 18243, IEC 62660)
    • Environmental testing
    • Development testing
    • Validation testing
    • Homologation testing (R100, UN 38.3 R10)

    EV electronics & components

E-mobility unites two previously separate worlds: the automotive industry, which works with ISO standards, and the electrical world, where IEC standards are used. Thanks to our heritage, at DEKRA we have extensive experience of both types of standards, which means we are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between the two. From plugs, cables and connectors to wiring, switches, inverters and converters, DEKRA’s experts can advise you on the right testing and certification approach in your situation.

DEKRA’s EV electronics & components services include:
