International Day for Biological Diversity: How DEKRA is Striving to Continuously Grow and Support Biodiversity
May 22, 2026Audit / SustainabilityBeneath our feet, a hidden ecosystem of earthworms, insects, fungi, and roots keeps soils fertile.
Around us, pollinators sustain food systems, birds disperse seeds, and interconnected habitats regulate climate, air, and water. Biodiversity is not only about protecting nature — it is about safeguarding the resilience of the systems that sustain societies, economies, and future generations.
Today, May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us of the essential role biodiversity plays in sustaining life on Earth and invites us to reflect on the growing challenges arising from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable land use arising from climate change and human-induced activities. These pressures are leading to habitat loss and are accelerating species decline at an unprecedented pace. Protecting and restoring biodiversity has therefore become a global priority, reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
As the global partner for a safe, secure and sustainable world, DEKRA is strengthening its commitment to these goals — through clear sustainability strategies and tangible actions – starting at its headquarters in Stuttgart Vaihingen, Germany.
Starting at Home: Biodiversity at DEKRA Headquarters in Stuttgart
Two years ago, DEKRA made the decision to strengthen its contribution to biodiversity by starting right at its own headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.
The initiative focused on:
- Native plant species that support local ecosystems
- New habitats for insects and wildlife
- Horizontal and vertical greenery to improve the microclimate
- Nature-based attractive recreational spaces for employees
- Educational signage to raise awareness about biodiversity
This transformation demonstrates how corporate spaces can evolve beyond functionality to actively support ecological restoration while improving employee wellbeing.

Measuring Progress and Growing Further
For DEKRA, biodiversity is an ongoing journey.
One year after the first implementation, a third-party assessment carried out by Wild Company – supported by The Stuttgart Climate Innovation Fund – rated the ecological impact of the headquarters’ greening measures and identified additional opportunities for improvement.

Based on the outcomes, DEKRA introduced further biodiversity measures, including:
- Bird nesting boxes
- A sand habitat to support insects and wild bees
- A Benjes-hedge providing shelter for small animals
- A comprehensive long-term ecological maintenance concept
These measures reflect DEKRA’s belief that sustainability requires continuous assessment, adaptation, and improvement.
Biodiversity as Part of Corporate Responsibility
Businesses play a critical role in shaping a sustainable future. Integrating biodiversity into corporate infrastructure, risk management, and sustainability strategies is increasingly becoming a key component of responsible business leadership.
That is why DEKRA also supports organizations through Biodiversity Audits — helping companies assess ecological impacts, identify opportunities for biodiversity enhancement, and align environmental action with broader sustainability and ESG objectives.
By combining expertise in safety, sustainability, and auditing, DEKRA helps organizations transform biodiversity from aspiration into measurable progress.
A Shared Responsibility
Protecting biodiversity is not the responsibility of governments or organizations alone — it requires collective action.
Supporting regional and sustainable agriculture, planting native species on balconies and gardens, or creating insect habitats are simple but meaningful ways individuals can contribute.
On this International Day for Biological Diversity, DEKRA reaffirms its commitment to advancing biodiversity as part of its broader mission: to be a trusted partner for a sustainable and safe world.
Because protecting biodiversity means protecting the future — for people, planet, and generations to come.
